Fractures or broken bones are common in children as they are more prone to falls and accidents whilst their balance, skill in movement and bone strength are developing. There are many different types of fractures which will vary according to the severity and location of the injury. Treatment will also vary but usually requires a period of immobilisation to allow the fracture to heal.

How can physiotherapy help following a fracture?

As the limb may have been immobilised for a period of time in order for the fracture to heal secondary complications such as muscle weakness, pain and stiffness may have developed. Physiotherapy can help a child recover their function by:
  • Improving range of movement and muscle strength
  • Reducing pain and stiffness
  • Assisting return to normal activities as soon as possible
Treatment will be dependent on the child's needs but may include:
  • Exercises to improve muscle strength and range of movement
  • Pain management advice such as use of heat and ice
  • Education on normal patterns of movement for standing, walking and running
  • Hydrotherapy to aid weight bearing and increased function

Following a long period of time in a cast after a fracture, your child may require passive stretching techniques to engable them to get their range of motion back.Above: Following a long period of time in a cast after a fracture, your child may require passive stretching techniques to engable them to get their range of motion back.
