Torticollis

What is torticollis?

Torticollis (also known as wry neck) is a condition affecting the muscles of the neck that causes the head to tilt to one side. The condition may be congenital or acquired. In congenital torticollis birth trauma or mal-positioning in the womb may cause damage to the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck resulting in spasm. The head is tilted sideways towards the affected side and rotated restricting range of motion. Acquired torticollis affects previously normal children as a result or other factors such as acquired tumours, infection or certain medication.

How can physiotherapy help torticollis?

The effects of torticollis can be distressing for the child and may affect posture and freedom of head movements during key stages of development. It is therefore essential that torticollis is diagnosed and treated efficiently to avoid secondary complications. Our specialist paediatric physiotherapists can provide assessment and treatment which may include:
  • Stretches to the affected neck muscles
  • Handling and mobilisation of the head and neck to promote symmetry
  • Exercises to promote muscle balance
  • Positioning and postural advice to parents
  • Teaching parents appropriate exercises that can be completed at home
  • Use of heat to reduce muscle spasm
  • Use of collars where appropriate
In cases where the torticollis is spasmodic botulinum toxin may be used to relax the affected muscles. Physiotherapy is usually indicated following injection in order to maximise the results and prevent recurrence where possible. Severe cases may require surgical release and further physiotherapy treatment to m
